“Custom Signage” is a term that is thrown around frequently, but more often than not, is not thoroughly explained. So, today’s blog will highlight a recent project that will help to explain what a custom sign is, and will help you to understand standardized signage compared to “custom signage”.

Standard Signage

Whether you realize it or not, you have seen, read, or used, a standardized sign almost every day of your life. All sign shops, including Divine Signs, fabricate, produce, and install standardized signs on a daily basis. Standardized signs are almost always the same size, have the same content/artwork, or are made using the same materials time after time. A great example of a standardized sign is a yard sign/political sign. Yard signs are almost always 18” x 24”, printed on Coroplast (corrugated plastic), and installed using metal step stakes.

Although the content/artwork on the sign is not always the same, we know that when a customer calls asking for a yard sign or political sign they are looking for an 18” x 24” sign on coroplast. Another group of signs that are largely standardized are traffic signs. Signs such as Stop Signs, Speed Limit Signs, Yield Signs, etc., are all standardized. These signs are almost always made the same size, using the same design and fonts, and using the same materials.

Custom Signage

A custom sign is a sign that breaks all these rules! Although custom signs are not always complicated, they are not limited to a standard size or message. Take the photo above for example. Our customer was looking for a way to have a different image displayed on the wall depending on what side of the hallway you were walking down. Obviously, there is not a standardized sign, at a standardized size, that could accommodate that request. So, after collaborating with our customer, we came up with the ACCORDION WALL.

We custom cut, bent, and printed aluminum panels that created an accordion affect, which allowed two different images to be displayed on the same wall, without clashing with one another. To explain this further, imagine you are walking down a hallway looking at the wall on your left. The panels were bent in such a way that allowed you to see one image as you walked down the hallway. Now, if you got to the end of this hallway and turned around (viewing the wall on your right), you would see a completely different image. These signs are the essence of what a custom sign is!
